MLP- The Centaur

Description

So I really freakin’ love the idea of centaurs and how they’d work, and I was also asked by a few people how I think they’d look in the world of MLP, so I decided to whip up a quick headcanon sketchdump to illustrate that! :3 None of the characters shown is Tirek, although I’ll eventually draw a full-bodied image of him at some point.

These badboys were a bunch of fun to draw, especially since I had to try to see how they’d look if it were ape/horse instead of human/hores hybrid… thing. For those of you who don’t know, I am not fond of the idea that humans exist in Equestria (and no, EQ doesn’t count for me specifically because it’s a spinoff of the show). As such, humans DON’T exist in my headcanon of Gaia (my name for the MLP world), although humans might exist in their folklore as a mythical creature, similar to how a minotaur is to in real life. As such, the creatures in their world that is “human/animal” hybrids (minotaur, centaur, satyr, faun) is replaced to be more ape/animal hybrid creature. :3

But yeah. Also, forgive me for some of the wonkiness here. I’m half-sleep at this point so I shouldn’t be typing anyway, but I did because I wanted to go ahead and get this headcanon out. With that said, let’s go ahead and move on to the headcanon!

FIRE DEH CANONS!! D:<

———-

The Centaur is a part of of the Taurus family, the classification of the creatures that are seemingly half-primate/half-ungulate. This includes the Satyrthe Minotaur, and the Faun as well. The Centaur in general is specifically a creature that often seems to be a mix between an ape, an equine, and a bovine (particularly in the facial region.)

———-

Appearance:
The Centaur is a very tall creature, the average height clocking in close to 14ft from head to toe for both sexes. The creature is also very heavily muscular. Like its relatives, the female centaur does not have prominent breasts. Their breasts only become slightly more noticeably “fuller” is when the centauress is nursing her foals. Both genders grow horns, however the shape of the horns depends on the individual.

The centaur, due to its torso resembling that of a gorilla, has long, powerful arms that are strong enough to support the entirety of the centaur’s weight with ease. Centaurs are completely covered in a dense coat (its length varies) aside from the lack of fur in the face and sometimes along the arms, depending on the breed of centaur. They typically gain a thick ruff around the neck however it isn’t uncommon for a centaur to lack thick said ruff. The coat and mane –like many creatures in this world– can come in a variety of colors and markings. That said, the most common coat color in centaurs tend to be grey, brown, black,  red, and orange.

Typically the torso of the centaur is that of an ape, with the face being a mixture of gorilla and, commonly, bull, with the rest of their body being equine-like. There are different breeds of Centaur that show different characteristics in the body while remaining similar, such as the body of a caribou or a bovine.Their hands/paws (either is acceptable) are large and are tipped with claws that are short, but sharp. Both sexes harbor long and sharp canines.

Diet:
Like their relatives in the Taurus family, the Centaur is omnivourous. Unlike Minotaur –who prefer meat– and the satyr and fauns –who prefer vegetation and fruits over meat– the centaur is fairly even in what their diet consists of. Their diets are often supplemented by fruits, herbs, and venison. Despite how large they are, the centaur prefers to hunt in medium-sized groups in order to work together to take down prey. Groups are implemented when foraging as well. Despite the relatively neutral stance in what their diet consists mostly of, being natives in Taurus often means their is special emphasis on The Hunt. How the particular tribe celebrates said hunt varies between tribes and species of Taurus, but the general idea of it remains the same: being a skilled hunter eludes to one being able to make the decisions needed to succeed and survive for themselves and for their tribemates, friends, and family.

Centaurs also engage in growing crops and even herding small flocks of domesticated stock animals, however the wide range of wilds allows them the option of foraging and hunting wild game as well. They are particularly fond of onions, avocados, and there is special emphasis placed upon the wild four-tusked Boar, a very large species of wild swine that is native to Taurus.

Breeding:
Due to the Centaur being a part of Taurus, both the species family and the country of the same name, their approach to romance is open. They are not known as an overly affectionate race, however like the Minotaurs marriage and romance in general is indeed taken seriously.

A centauress’s gestation period is 10 months and she will usually only has one calf at a time; centaur twins is an uncommon occurrence. The baby centaur can be referred to as “calf”, “cub”, “infant”, or “child”, and are born tiny, fluffy, defenseless, and unable to walk, however the extra month in their mother’s stomach is to allow them to be able to support their heads and upper bodies on their own. The first week the parents will have to cradle their child until they learn to support themselves, and the following month involves them carrying their child due to them still being unable to walk. The centaur foal will learn how to walk (very wobbly) faster than the equine, however their overall aging speed is more or less the same.

Behavior:
Despite being native to Taurus and still very much apart of the happenings of Taurus, the centaurs are rather spread out all over the world due to their somewhat nomadic nature. It’s because of said nature that Centaurs typically don’t involve themselves in worldly political affairs, however they are diligent in making sure they have representation within the Council of Holds of Taurus.  The country, like Zebrica, is very tribe-like in orientation (in which there are many different tribes in the same country), however their government works somewhat like an oligarchy:

There is a “council” of sorts (referred to as the Council of the Holds) that is composed the leader and most trusted shaman/elder/representative of each individual “Hold” in Taurus (there are 15 holds in total). Each hold is under the rule of the Alpha (basically a king/queen/president) of Taurus, whom of which could be referred to as the “High Chief” of the country. The requirements to become the High Chief is that the Taur in question must be an experienced warrior and hunter, and must be at least 30 years old or older; the race of the Taur does not matter. Political experience isn’t necessarily needed to try to become the High Chief of Taurus, however it is preferred by those in the seats of the council.

Every four years, there is a huge, country-wide tournament held for those who wish to challenge the current Alpha for his/her seat as the High Chief. Only the best of the best will be able to get into said tournament, so in the year before the fourth year of a High Chief’s rule, there is are hold-local tournaments held, in which each Hold has their own competition to determine who will go to challenge the High Chief. These tournaments will determine the candidates’ hunting and battle skill, their ability to adapt, their ability to lead, and whether or not they follow the Code of Honor. Each hold’s tournament will send out two candidates (the winner of the tourney and the 2nd placer winner). This gives the final tournament 30 participates.

Once the candidates for the 4th Year Tourney has been chosen, they will train for the remainder of the time up until the final High Chief tournament begins. Once said tourney rolls around , 30 candidates will battle each other until there is only one who makes it to the final round. That round involves fighting the High Chief himself/herself. Whomever wins the duel will then be nominated High Chief of Taurus.

However, in the event that the current High Chief is less than satisfactory, those of the Council of the Holds are welcomed to challenge the High Chief to a duel for the title.

And there you have it. As said earlier, please forgive whatever wonkiness is in there, but don’t be surprised if I come back and edit some of this info. Anyway, until then I hope you enjoyed, and if you have any questions feel more than free to ask! :3
