Description
One of the last paintings I've finished for Bronycon! I still need to finish Spike and, if I can get around to it, Cadance, but until then have yourselves a Luna painting!
This one was done on an Artist Panel with acrylic paints, and I worked on it for 8 hours straight until I completed it. Actually that's not all that long considering, but that's probably because I LOVE working with starry scenes, and Luna is basically the epitome of starry scenes given her theme. x3 This badboy will be a Bronycon exclusive and I'm still on the fence as to whether or not she'll be a Bronycon exclusive print, but we'll see.
So the painting itself. This is me still trying out that somewhat "chibi", somewhat simplified version of my own style. I'm not fond of the Chibi style (I'm not denying it can be cute, but I personally don't prefer it), so what I'm going for is more caricature/actual miniature ponies instead of the normal size I tend to depict them (4ft average at the shoulder). I don't think I pulled it off very well BUT Luna was simple to draw, so it's a start.
The idea behind this image was inspired by BackGryphon and Baasik's song, Moonlight (which also inspired another one of my favorite traditional pieces I've painted, Eclipse: Reunited With You). I fucking love that song man. ;_;
But yeah, ANYWAY, the idea: I wanted something cute to do with Luna so originally this was going to be her fishing for stars. But that's already been done more than once, and it seems to be a common theme among painting anyway, so I decided to try a little something different. Instead of fishing for stars, Luna is using the North Star as bait as she fishes for Nightmares. As the protector of dreams, I'd imagine any nightmare she encounters can be dealt with quickly, but sometimes a pony's nightmare can be elusive. They're attracted to good dreams (the nightmare gobbles them up to replace them with themselves), and Luna can make her stars look similar to a good dream, which glows either blue or gold, so she decides to use false stars to draw the nightmares out before destroying them. Like fishing, how successful she is depends on the method she uses and a variety of different circumstances; sometimes she has a very good haul, sometimes she doesn't even get a nibble. While she wouldn't necessarily call it "fun", nightmare fishing is an interesting pass time she enjoys while on dream duty.
I wouldn't really call this headcanon since this is moreso for the pic itself and not how Luna actually hunts down nightmares, but take it however you will. Regardless, this was a LOAD of fun to work on, and I hope you guys like it! Feel more than free to ask me any questions if you have some as well. ^.^
